The thermal protection system (TPS) protects the Orbiter from the cold vacuum of space as well as the intense heat of entry into the EarthÕs atmosphere.

The TPS is called a ÒpassiveÓ thermal system because none of its components move. Its components are made of materials that can absorb incredible amounts of heat energy without becoming too hot themselves.
